Flame-Retardant 3D Filament for Safety-Critical Production

Onyx FR™ is a flame-retardant 3D filament engineered for environments that require strict fire-safety compliance and reliable mechanical performance. This high-performance polymer 3D print material is a carbon-fiber-filled nylon that maintains strength, stiffness, and thermal stability under demanding conditions. In addition, it meets the UL94 V-0 requirements for filament printing. This means that the printed parts self-extinguish within 10 seconds without dripping, making it ideal for aerospace-compliant materials and other regulated sectors. Onyx FR™ delivers both flame resistance and structural capability, giving engineers a predictable way to manufacture durable, safety-critical components in-house. In addition, its consistent mechanical behavior and stable thermal properties make it a dependable replacement for coated or post-treated plastics.

 

Industrial-Grade Workflow with Markforged Systems

Onyx FR™ supports brackets, housings, ducting, cable routing components, and other parts exposed to heat and mechanical load. The filament also prints with a clean matte finish and maintains dimensional accuracy across varied operating conditions, supporting tight-tolerance production. This flame-retardant 3D filament is compatible with Markforged systems such as the X7™ and FX20™, both of which support Continuous Fiber Reinforcement. When reinforced with carbon fiber, Kevlar®, or fiberglass, the parts can also reach strength levels suitable for structural end-use parts without compromising its UL94 V-0 rating. This allows engineering teams to produce fire-rated, high-strength components within a controlled and efficient workflow.

 
Material Properties for High-Demand Manufacturing

Onyx FR™ delivers a 145°C heat deflection temperature, high flexural strength, and strong resistance to chemical exposure. In addition, its carbon-fiber-reinforced nylon base provides durability under cyclic load and elevated temperatures. It also outperforms many flame-treated polymers in applications requiring stability, repeatability, and long-term performance. Onyx FR™ provides a flame-retardant material platform that supports both compliance and throughput. As a result it’s ideal for aerospace-compliant materials, industrial enclosures, or tooling used near electrical systems. It also shortens production cycles, reduces rework, and brings a high-performance polymer 3D print solution directly to the shop floor.
